Happy 40th birthday, Atari!

Before Halo, before Call of Duty -- heck, and before Mario -- there was clearly Atari. Even though the computer game itself has been invented before Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney made a decision to start this company, it turned out Atari that effectively launched the video game industry. Also it was about this date 40 years back that Atari began its march toward history. Five months after the company opened its doors on June 27, 1972, it introduced the planet to Pong, and in what way America (and the world) played games changed. Five years later, the company would launch a fresh revolution with all the introduction with the Atari 2600 home the game console .. This company has seen many famous alumni, including both Steve Jobs, who had his first real job at Atari after dropping out of college, and Bill Gates, who was actually fired from your company after his project got stalled. Both, naturally, continued to much greater things. But Bushnell loves to believe that the ability both had at Atari gave them the confidence to launch Apple and Microsoft. "Atari showed that youth could start big companies," he admits that. "Without that example it will have been more difficult for Jobs and Bill Gates, and the ones who came after them, to perform whatever they did." Bushnell and Dabney had just $500 together when Atari was founded. Within several years, the organization was collecting $2 billion in annual sales. For Bushnell, things came to a close as abruptly as they shot to popularity, though. Desperate for research and development funding since it come up with 2600, Bushnell sold the corporation to Warner Communications (better known today as Time Warner) in 1976 for $28 million. By November of the year, he was forced out on account of in-fighting. The 2600 removed along with the company would have been a technology leader, but in 1983, a deluge of low quality games -- such as the infamous E.T -- resulted in the crash of the video gaming industry. And no company fell harder than Atari. This company has been shuffled around many times ever since then. Today, it's owned by a Paris-based holding company. Bushnell avoided this company for many years, concentrating on other ventures (like founding Chuck E. Cheese), in 2010 he returned towards company that set him on his path, serving within the advisory role. "The brand continues to be powerful, and not really a retro thing," he says. "It possesses a whole bunch of vital intellectual property, and plenty of people still consider Atari as a company of innovation." Honoring the company's b-day, here's our favorite ridiculous old Atari commercial. Buckle up! __________________________________________________
